ProProduction and SetHero

SetHero is built around one thing, the call sheet, and does it in depth. ProProduction builds the call sheet from the whole production and runs the shoot day after it goes out. Here’s where each one is stronger.

Who each is for

The short version.

SetHero is a good fit if

Call sheets are the job and you want the most control over them: your own layouts and templates, texts and emails sent by SetHero with delivery status, and production reports with overtime and meal penalties. Maybe you schedule elsewhere, or you want to pay once for a single project.

ProProduction is a good fit if

You want the call sheet to come out of the whole production (script, shots, schedule, people, locations and budget) and a live board for the shoot day, without counting cast, crew or shooting days.

ScriptYes

Imports PDF, Word, Final Draft, Fountain and plain text. Write new drafts with revision colors, break down with the usual 8 categories plus your own, print sides, a lined script and breakdown sheets, and export Final Draft or Fountain. No two-column AV scripts, and no dual dialogue when writing.

No

No script import, writing or breakdown. Scenes come in from a spreadsheet, Scriptation, Cinapse, Think Crew or Scenechronize. Sides go out as a file attached to the call sheet.

Shot list and storyboardsYes

List, Board and Grid views. Frames drawn, built from a reference library or shot on your phone, on the gate of your actual camera (108 bodies, 268 lens series). Up to 4 cameras a shot. CSV in and out, and PDF.

No

Not offered.

Setups and floor plansYes

Top-down lighting plans with each camera’s real field of view, 269 fixtures and 129 modifiers, buildings and set pieces to scale, and a gear list PDF.

No

Not listed.

Scheduling and stripsYes

Days planned against a 12-hour day, a stripboard, units, day types, a one-liner and shooting schedule, and a cast day out of days. No import from Movie Magic or other schedulers.

Partly

A list of shoot days and a scene schedule in each call sheet. No stripboard. Movie Magic data comes in through a separate paid converter to Excel.

Call sheetsYes

A personal sheet for each person, sent by email or link, now or scheduled. Opened and Confirmed for each person, updates only to the people whose details changed, attachments, and Text from your own phone. Weather and the nearest ER are US only, and there are no saved layouts.

Yes

Its core. Custom sections, columns and headers, and saved templates. Department and personal calls. Email and text sent by SetHero with delivery and open status, confirmations, attachments, automatic weather, map pins and watermarked PDFs.

Crew and contactsYes

Crew and cast never pay and don’t need an account. CSV and vCard import, holds and pencils, rates, deal memos signed from a link, and job posts. No timecards.

Partly

Crew open the call sheet from a link, and a company contact list is shared across projects. Every person on a project counts toward the plan’s size, and collaborators need an account.

Locations and scoutingYes

Script places tied to real locations, with permits, parking and the nearest ER. Scout photos from a phone record where you stood and which way you faced.

Partly

Locations with map pins and links on the call sheet. Scout photos and permits aren’t listed.

Budget and expensesYes

Templates or your own chart of accounts, labor from bookings, fringes, purchase orders, approvals, floats, and costs and receipts logged from a phone. Reports and CSV for the accountant. Paid plans only, with no link to accounting software.

No

Not listed.

On setYes

A live board with ahead or behind and a wrap estimate, takes with clip names and circled takes, QR check-in, and day reports. Camera control for 31 ARRI, RED, Canon and Blackmagic bodies through a Mac on set.

Partly

Production reports built from the call sheet, with times, overtime, meal penalties and cast time logs. A live board, check-in and camera tools aren’t listed.

On a phonePartly

Everything opens in a phone browser, and crew need no app or account. There’s no app to install, a page has to be open to keep working offline, and Strips and schedule editing are for a computer or tablet.

Partly

Crew read and confirm call sheets in a phone browser. No app, and reviewers find building sheets on a phone awkward.

Teams and permissionsYes

Studio for up to 10 people, and Organizations with teams, leadership access, 7 roles plus custom roles, view as, share links and your own web address. Single sign-on with Microsoft, Google, Okta or any OpenID Connect provider on Organization and Enterprise.

Partly

Company contacts and projects, with 1 to 12 project admins by plan (unlimited on Enterprise). Finer roles aren’t listed.

Imports, exports and connectionsPartly

Calendar feeds for Apple, Google and Outlook. CSV, PDF, Final Draft, Fountain and Avid ALE files. No public API, Zapier, Slack or cloud drive connections.

Partly

Imports from Excel and CSV, Scriptation, Cinapse, Think Crew and Scenechronize, and free migration from StudioBinder. Lists export to Excel, and call sheets and reports to PDF. Calendar feeds aren’t listed.

Free planYes

One project with up to 50 shots and no time limit. Call sheets go by link only, with no PDFs or camera control.

Partly

The first project is free for up to 75 people and 5 shooting days, and it’s free for enrolled students. After that, a subscription or a one-time project price.

Your data and leavingPartly

PDFs and CSVs of most things, plus a project archive file you can restore here (paid plans, and it doesn’t hold images). No one-click export of everything. Cancel and you’re on Free with nothing deleted. Deleting your account is self-serve, and it’s kept for 30 days in case you change your mind.

Partly

Lists to Excel, plus PDFs. A whole-account export isn’t listed. Deleting your account is self-serve, takes effect at once and can’t be undone.

AIPartly

Off unless you add your own Anthropic key, and we don’t train AI on your work. Today it suggests a day’s shot order.

No

None listed.

“Coming soon” work isn't counted.

Where SetHero is better

  • Call sheet layoutYou choose the sections, columns and header, with several logos, and save layouts as templates. Ours has six show-or-hide switches and carries the last sheet forward.
  • Texts sent for youSetHero sends the texts itself, with delivery status for each one, on every plan. Ours opens Messages on your phone, one person at a time.
  • Production reportsOvertime, meal penalties and cast time logs for union paperwork. Ours reports planned against actual with the reason for each delay, but doesn’t track meal penalties.
  • Imports from other toolsScriptation, Cinapse, Think Crew, Scenechronize and Movie Magic (through a converter), plus free migration from StudioBinder. We don’t import from other schedulers.
  • Pay once, or start freeA single project from $10, the first project free for up to 75 people, and free for students.
  • Track recordBuilt by a former 2nd AD and used by companies such as BuzzFeed, UFC and FOX. By its own count, more than 300,000 call sheets have gone out.

Where ProProduction is better

  • The call sheet fills itselfCalls, scenes, cast, locations, parking, the nearest ER and meals come from the script, schedule, people and locations you already set up. In SetHero you build them on the sheet or import them.
  • The shoot dayA live board everyone follows, takes with clip names, QR check-in and camera control. SetHero lists none of these.
  • Everything before the call sheetScript, storyboards, lighting setups, a stripboard, scouting and a budget, in the same project.
  • No counting people or daysPaid plans don’t count projects, cast, crew or shooting days. SetHero caps people and days per project and prices by projects a year.
  • Crew get moreA calendar feed with every call, a My schedule page across productions, and deal memos signed from a link, all without an account.
Pricing

What it costs.

SetHero prices by how many projects you run a year and caps people and shooting days per project, or charges once for a single project. ProProduction charges by plan and doesn’t count projects, cast, crew or shooting days on paid plans.

Switching

Switching from SetHero

SetHero exports its lists to Excel. Most of the rest comes from your script.

  1. PeopleExport cast and crew from SetHero, save the file as CSV, and import it into People. Each person then fills in their own details from a link.
  2. Scenes and locationsImport the script (PDF, Word, Final Draft or Fountain) and the scenes and places come with it. Link each place to a real location with the address lookup.
  3. The first call sheetPut scenes on days and book people, and each day’s call sheet is built for you. Check it in Preview and send it.
